About the city

Siegen is located centrally in Germany, around 125 km northwest of Frankfurt and 90 km east of Cologne. International airports are in Frankfurt, Cologne, and Dusseldorf.

The city of Siegen with around 100.000 inhabitants is located at the southern tip of North Rhine-Westfalia in the valley of the river Sieg. It is surrounded by a beautiful landscape shaped by forests, lakes, and mountains of the "Sauerland", "Rothaargebirge" and "Westerwald". Downtown Siegen offers many pubs, restaurants and cafes, but also theaters, cinemas and concert halls.

The University of Siegen has around 18.000 students, and its science department has a strong standing in both quantum information theory and experiment, as well as in quantum optics at the nanoscale. Since 2023, the university is offering the novel interdisciplinary Master study program on “Quantum Science”, open for international students with a Bachelor’s degree in physics, mathematics, computer science, and electrical engineering. Travelling by air

If travelling by air, it is recommended to fly to Cologne/Bonn, Frankfurt or Düsseldorf. From all airports hourly train services provide a connection to Siegen. On average, the shortest travel time is from Cologne/Bonn (about 1.5 to 2 hours). From Frankfurt, it takes between 2 to 2.5 hours. Travelling from Düsseldorf to Siegen takes about 2.5 hours.

Cologne/Bonn(CGN)

Participants arriving at Cologne/Bonn airport (CGN) take a commuter train (S-Bahn) to Siegburg/Bonn and connect there to regional trains (RE 9) to Siegen (1.5 ~ 2 hours).

Frankfurt/Main (FRA)

Participants arriving by plane at Frankfurt/Main airport (FRA) typically
travel via Frankfurt Main Station (Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof) to Siegen.
At the airport take the commuter train (S-Bahn, RE or RB) mostly departing from the underground station for regional trains (Regionalbahnhof tracks 1-3) and connect at Frankfurt Main Station to regional trains (RE 99) or some long distance trains (IC) with services to Siegen (2 ~ 2.5 hours).

Dusseldorf (DUS)

Participants arriving at Dusseldorf Airport DUS (Flughafen Düsseldorf) take a commuter train (S-Bahn, RE, or RB) to Cologne Main Station (Köln Hauptbahnhof) and change there for the regional trains (RE 9) to Siegen (2.5 hours).

Travelling by train

Siegen Main Station (Siegen Hauptbahnhof) is connected to major train hubs in Frankfurt and Köln (Cologne) with hourly service. You need to buy train tickets before boarding a train and may do so at the station (ticket counter or ticket vending machine) or online. Travelling by bus

Apart from trains there are several long-distance bus services usually leaving from or close to regional airports and/or train stations. Ticket prices may vary depending on the provider, day of the week, and spots available. The bus stop in Siegen is located at Koblenzer Str. 43, close to the two hotels we reserved. Siegen is directly connected to the motorway (Autobahn) A45 providing a connection to Frankfurt and located near A4 with connection to Cologne (Köln).
