Machine learning has been used successfully in physics research for decades. With the advent of deep learning methods in computer science, a renaissance of machine learning in physics occurred in recent years. The colloquium explains the basic ideas of Deep Learning, introduces network concepts suitable for our data, and shows the potential arising from autonomous model building. A number of applications from particle and astroparticle physics as well as new implications of large language models for physics education will be presented.
